Folk singer/songwriter Terry Holder will be performing songs from her recently released third CD “Ticket To The Moment” at 8 p.m. Friday, March 6, at redhare. A weekend of original music will continue at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 7, when Portland folk and soul singer Johanna takes the stage. Admission is $10 for each show.
Holder moved to Olympia, Wash., about a year ago, after many years living in Alaska. A decade ago, she suffered a double trauma of “empty nest” syndrome combined with the death of her mother, and to find solace, she began to write songs. Her first CD, “Am I Here Is This Me,” garnered critical and popular acclaim and she has continued since then, taking listeners on an emotionally-driven journey of song, with flashes of abandon, heartbreak, love and social awareness.
From the eternal questions of purpose and love lost or forsaken to social commentary about those who are less fortunate and are on the fringe of our society, the songs on “Ticket To The Moment” reflect basic human emotions with layers of meaning behind them. During the recording sessions she was backed in the studio by veteran musicians Freebo (Bonnie Raitt), Garey Shelton (Grammy winner), Joel Tepp (Little Feat), Ben Smith (Heart), Jerry Holder, John Nyman, Cynthia Morrow and John Morton. Holder was recognized for her talent as a songwriter in 2008 when she performed at the Kerrville Folk Festival.
A songwriter since the age of 9, Johanna had released her first CD by age 20 and had studied with Chris Williamson, Tret Fure, Rhiannon and Keith Terry, performed in musical theater, rock and world-beat bands, gospel and women’s community choirs, improvisational acting and singing troupes, short and feature-length films and countless festivals, rallies, clubs, coffee houses, colleges and universities. She performs solo, as part of an ensemble or with full band.
She has been compared to singers from Sarah McLachlan to Carol King to Ella Fitzgerald. Her first CD showcased her music in acoustic folk and world-beat styles, and her latest CD, “If I Could Fly,” expands her repertoire to include rock, soul, gospel and a cappella.
