Rogue Ales and Public House is celebrating New Year’s Eve two nights early with live music by Hoodoo Johnson at 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29. Rogue survived the North Coast storm of December ’07 and wants to bring a little relief to Astoria and surrounding areas by making admission a can of food for the local food bank. Have fun while supporting the community.
Hoodoo Johnson was formed in 1998 to provide an outlet for artistic expression and outrageous good times for the band’s members. The core of the band consists of four of the five current members of the world-famous Kingsmen. In 2003, the Kingsmen’s recording of “Louie Louie” was named the greatest jukebox hit of all time. A bassist and harp player who gives the group tremendous versatility and depth joins the founding four. The Hoodoo ensemble includes Keizer’s own Rockin’ Todd McPherson, with Barry Curtis and Steve Peterson of Seattle, Mike Mitchell and Scott Bickford of Portland and Jeff Hale of Corvallis.
For several years, Hoodoo has played area night spots (frequently Salem’s West Side Station), country clubs, parties and work-release socials. Sometimes they split up into smaller units or loan out members to several other bands, including The Wannabeatles and The Bowling Stones. Hoodoo spans an eclectic variety of popular music stylings. In a typical set, they may tribute Link Wray, Bob Dylan, Johnny Burnette, Muddy Waters, the Doors, Tom Petty, Jimmy Buffet, U2, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bo Diddley, Toots Hibbert, Hank Williams, Ricky Nelson, The Monkees and Helen Reddy.
Whatever the tune, the show’s organizers said Hoodoo’s rhythm section locks some of the best grooves in the world – no toe remains untapped. The abundance of guitars has audiences crying for less. Throw in some soul-laving harp for texture and relief and total satisfaction is assured. So, bring some canned food and your dancing shoes and enjoy a great night out on Pier 39.
