There are no limitations in art. Ashlyn Cavin explores collage rather than paint. Submitted photo.

Ruth Sunderland’s full day kindergarten class hosts an art show from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 12 at Fulio’s Pasteria and Tuscan Steak House, 1149 Commercial St. The show is part of a Service Learning project that brings students, curriculum and community together. The public is welcome.

The show features two art projects. The first project is a cross curricular art lesson on texture plus a science lesson on the different types of flowers to which butterflies are attracted. After reading about butterflies and looking at sunflower paintings by Vincent Van Gogh, students mixed paint with flour and used recycled cardboard and wadded up paper to create their own textured paintings of spring flowers on watercolor washed paper. The second project coincided with an author/illustrator unit on Eric Carle, using his book, “The Little Seed and the Very Hungry Caterpillar” as a starting point.

The kindergarteners have also planted two butterfly gardens in their local school community as part of the Service Learning Project that combines science, art, literature and community.

Community partners who have made this possible include Fulio’s, The Compleat Photographer, Lewis and Clark Nursery, Erickson Floral Company, John Jeans, Jessica Fruehling, Grady Parker and Austin Rieck.
