- The Privateer Lynx makes a stop in Astoria for dockside tours and adventure sails Thursday through Monday, Sept. 14 through 18. Submitted photo.
The 122-foot square topsail schooner Lynx will be sailing into the 17th Street dock adjacent to the Columbia River Maritime Museum at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14. Join the flotilla as she fires from her main battery of 6-pound cannonades.
The Lynx is an interpretation of a privateer or naval schooner from the War of 1812. She is fitted with period ordnance and flies pennants and flags from the 1812 era, making her one of the first ships to defend America’s freedom. The Lynx crew wear period uniforms and operate the ship in keeping with the maritime traditions of early 19th-century America. Students and adults will recognize the War of 1812 as a significant element of American heritage and as a turning point in the development of our national identity.
The Privateer Lynx was hired to train the cast and crew of the hit movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
The Lynx will be offering educational dockside tours and sailing adventures at the 17th Street dock. Climb aboard and step back in time as you relive history hauling on lines to raise the sails, learning the life of a sailor during the early 1800s and firing a round of black powder from the cannons on board.
Free dockside tours are available from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday. Tours are $5 for adults and free for children 12 and younger from 9 a.m. to noon Friday through Monday, Sept. 15 through 18. Adventure sails are scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Friday through Monday at a cost of $50 for adults and $25 for children. For reservations, call (866) 446-5969 or visit www.privateerlynx.org
