The Clatsop County Genealogical Society hosts a program about DNA testing and its use in genealogical research. Emily Aulicino, a nationally known genealogist, will speak at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Flag Room of the Astoria Public Library, 450 10th St. The program is open to the public and there is no charge.

The use of DNA testing in relation to genealogy is the newest aid to genealogy research. This tool for genealogists has been in use for only the past five years. DNA can support a paper trail that may be in question because of the lack of available legal records. DNA testing for genealogical use is only recently leaving the pioneering stage and its popularity is growing daily, with thousands testing monthly throughout the world.

Aulicino will explain the basics of genetic genealogy, how DNA testing helps genealogical research and how to choose a testing company. Attendees will learn how to use DNA to break through brick walls and how to prove or disprove genealogical claims. A DNA kit will be awarded as a door prize.

Aulcino also teaches classes on genetic genealogy at the Oregon Genealogical Forum in Portland. She is a speaker and regional coordinator of the International Society of Genetic Genealogists and she manages eight DNA projects through Family Tree DNA. Aulcino gives presentations throughout the Northwest, to groups including the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Jewish Genealogical Society of Oregon, the All Cultural Society of Ireland and various workshops.
