Scenery designer lectures

CANNON BEACH – The Cannon Beach History Center hosts a lecture by Craig Shepherd on “Playing at the Coaster Theatre.” This free program will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the History Center, located at the corner of Spruce and Sunset streets.

The artistic director of the Coaster Theatre Playhouse, Shepherd designs and paints sets for Coaster Theatre productions.

Shepherd has been painting and designing scenery for more than 30 years. On Broadway and in numerous national tours, his work as a scenic artist has been seen at the Goodspeed Opera House, Juilliard School, Pasadena Playhouse, the Mark Taper Forum and Geffen Playhouse.

Shepherd studied art history, fresco painting and restoration as an undergraduate in Siena, Italy, and went on to Venice, Italy, to complete a Masters of Fine Arts degree from New York University.

In addition, he has worked at numerous local theaters. A member of the Clatsop County Cultural Coalition Board, part of the Oregon Cultural Trust, Shepherd participates in Arts in the Schools programs and works with Cannon Beach Elementary and Seaside High School to bring the magic of theater to younger audiences.
