SEASIDE – Look in any book on the history of rock ‘n’ roll, and you’ll find Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen. This eight-piece super group was Billboard Magazine’s “World’s Best Live Band” in 1974-75, and their album, “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” is one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 100 albums of all time.

They made seven original albums, and the individual players all had their own bands, bringing the album total for the Lost Planet Airmen to more than 20. Included in their extensive repertoire are such classic hits as “Hot Rod Lincoln” and their self-penned party anthem, “Lost in the Ozone.” A typical set also includes such tunes as Ray Charles’ classic “Mess Around” and others like “Don’t Let Go.”

The Commander Cody Band is going strong and kicks butt on a nightly basis, still doing festivals, giant biker conventions, various sizes of college concerts and sleazy, down-home/uptown and/or very tiny bars. An average Cody show can be described as anywhere from raucous to electrifying.

Today’s Commander Cody Band features Mark Emerick on guitar (Greg Allman, Dickey Betts, Toy Caldwell, Marshall Tucker Band), Steve Barbuto on drums (Edgar Winter, Johnny Winter, James Montgomery), Rick Mullen on bass (Don McLean, Van Morrison), and Cody still pounding his piano into submission.

The Commander Cody Band will be appearing at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center, 415 First Ave. Advance tickets are available from Flashback Malt Shop, 318 Broadway, (503) 738-6614, and Seaside Scent Factory, 409 Broadway, (503) 738-7051. General admission is $15; a limited quantity of reserved floor and balcony seats are available for $20. According to coproducer Frank Kaim, advance tickets are recommended, as a sellout is anticipated because of the high number of car enthusiasts in town for the 2006 Muscle Beach Cruz, which takes place in the streets of downtown Seaside the same day. “Having seen this lineup of incredibly talented showmen, we consider this band to be one of the hottest on the road at any price, playing a special brand of hardcore boogie with a slight hint of twang,” Kaim said. “It’s just plain fun!”
