TAPA presents lighthearted ‘Iolanthe’

TILLAMOOK – The Tillamook Association for the Performing Arts presents a Gilbert and Sullivan musical, “Iolanthe” (pronounced “eye-oh-lan-thee”). The story involves a band of woodland fairies who fall in love with lordly members of Parliament, all of whom want to marry the same young shepherdess. But the shepherdess is a ward in chancery, so she can only marry with the permission of the Lord Chancellor, who wants to marry her himself. The music includes the famous song about nightmares, “Love, Unrequited, Robs Me of My Rest,” which describes in rapid-fire patter the sleeplessness and illusions that come with romance. Author Isaac Asmiov called this “the most tuneful and lighthearted of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.” It is also the most pointed satire on lawyers and legislators.
“Iolanthe” shows at The Barn Community Playhouse on 12th and Ivy streets in Tillamook at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, April 29 and 30 and May 6 and 7, with 2 p.m. Sunday matinees May 1 and 8. Reserved seating tickets may be purchased at The Bootery in Tillamook and at the door. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7.50 for students and seniors, and $25 for a family of four. To purchase tickets by phone, call (503) 842-2603. Concessions will be available for purchase.
