NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – Join the National Arbor Day Foundation during October, and your mailbox will look a bit leafier.

The nonprofit foundation is giving away five free crape myrtle trees to each person who joins as part of its Trees for America campaign.

“Crape myrtles were selected for this campaign because of their elegant color and form, making them an attractive addition to the home landscape,” said John Rosenow, National Arbor Day Foundation president. “These small flowering trees boast perfect, six-petaled flowers of pink and red, with leaves that change from summer green to autumn red, orange and yellow.”

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting between Nov. 1 and Dec. 10, with planting instructions enclosed. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge.

NADF members also receive a subscription to the foundation’s bimonthly publication, “Arbor Day,” and “The Tree Book,” with information about tree planting and care.

To receive the free trees, send a $10 membership contribution to Five Crape Myrtles, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410 by Oct. 31, or join online at arborday.org
