- The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita is commissioning an outdoor sculpture for the entrance to its public Wonder Garden.
The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita plans to commission a site-specific outdoor sculpture for the entrance to its public Wonder Garden.
India Downes-Le Guin, executive director, said the center is inviting Oregon-based artists to apply.
“This project seeks to pay homage to the long lineage of artists and artistic practices in Oregon, to highlight the artistic diversity of our region, and to increase awareness of the Hoffman Wonder Garden and Hoffman’s growth as a dedicated cultural center in our local community,” she said.
The application deadline is May 15. The budget of $45,000 will include design, fabrication, transportation and installation.
The Wonder Garden is a small botanic garden the size of a city lot that sits on a corner of Manzanita’s main street, Laneda Avenue. The garden is three blocks west of U.S. Highway 101, directly in the line of sight of cars and pedestrians as they head to the beach. Downes-Le Guin said it is a celebration of horticulture. “The Wonder Garden has been conceived, designed, planted, and maintained for the love and wonder of plants,” she added.
The art should be inspired by the concept of a “gateway” to the Hoffman Wonder Garden, though no literal gates are expected.
