The Saga Project, which celebrates Scandinavian folk art, will take place in Astoria May 3.

Two ceramic workshops open to youth and families are planned at Peace Lutheran Church at 725 33rd St., in Astoria, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participation is free, but limited spaces are available. Children must have an adult attend. Attendees should wear clothes to paint in.

Tiles designs show like Nissen or Tomten gnome-like creatures from Scandinavian folklore or a Saami boy with his reindeer. One shows Jormungandr, the distinctive serpent of Norse legend, which holds its tail in its mouth.

All attendees may decorate a ceramic Thor’s hammer to wear as a necklace.

The Saga Project was started by the Oregon Coast Children’s Theatre and Center for the Arts of Tillamook and Lincoln counties in 2019 with seed funds from the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, which supports Scandinavian heritage projects.

The May session in Astoria is part of several statewide cultural offerings celebrating the 35th anniversary of the arts group, which is based at the Fairview Grange in Tillamook.

The sculptural ceramic family workshop introduces people to old Norse and Viking heritage with ceramic tile designs based on historic carvings in wood and stone.
