ASTORIA — A presentation by John Kopp, a former U.S. Coast Guard surfman and author of the recent book “CG 41332,” will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Columbia River Maritime Museum’s Ford Room.
Kopp will share history about the Coast Guard rescue boat community, the background of the service’s Motor Lifeboat School in Ilwaco, Washington, and details of a pivotal training accident that occurred there in 1977.
A former Petty Officer 1st Class, Kopp spent four years stationed at Station Cape Disappointment between 2015 and 2019, where he managed training and worked as a boat operator during missions, including search and rescue operations.
After leaving the Coast Guard in 2019, Kopp transitioned into a new career in counseling psychology. “CG 41332” was published in 2023.
