- “The Last Man in Willapa” is Robert Michael Pyle’s latest collection with more than 75 poems. The book is expected to release on April 16.
For Robert Michael Pyle, the process of writing begins with careful attention paid to the natural world.
The author’s early works, including the 1986 book “Wintergreen,” spoke to changing landscapes of the Northwest, often from the vantage point of the Willapa Hills of southwest Washington state.
Pyle has called Grays River, Washington, home for more than 45 years. The area’s people, land and weather have inspired much of his writing, which includes titles like 2007’s “Sky Time in Gray’s River” and the 2020 poetry collection “Tidewater Reach.”
A Yale-trained ecologist and a Guggenheim Fellow, Pyle has paired conservation work with writing several guides to Northwest butterflies. His works also include 10 nonfiction titles, four poetry collections and the novel “Magdalena Mountain.”
His latest collection of poetry, “The Last Man in Willapa,” is expected in April.
In the meantime, Pyle will spend an afternoon sharing strategies and rhetorical approaches in a writing from nature workshop scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. The event is being organized by The Writer’s Guild of Astoria.
The workshop will be held at a private residence in the Alderbook neighborhood of Astoria. The exact location will be shared with participants after they register.
Students in the workshop will be guided in reflection on the natural world as it applies to writing and should expect to learn practices that can help to refine and sharpen their process.
The workshop will include plenty of time outdoors, and students are asked to prepare by bringing a bag lunch, walking shoes and their chosen writing materials.
