Memories of a winter windstorm

From the living room of a third-floor hotel suite in Cannon Beach, sharp gusts of wind howled against every pane of glass, but that wasn’t the sound we had hoped to quiet.

A set of wooden Adirondack chairs, placed in another season for relaxing under blue skies, were being tossed by the wind across a deck from some wooden railing to the door. With some difficulty and a few laughs, my mother and I brought them inside, listening for moments between the gusts to pick them up.

Just a few minutes later, with the chairs inside, she could still hear the tossing of furniture from neighboring rooms. She gave a call to the front desk. I’ll never forget the response, regarding the wind — “we don’t worry until it’s 90.”

Indeed, Cannon Beach isn’t worried about its season of storms, though in some years wind gusts have reached well over that 90 mph threshold. But they’re also a reminder of the wild coastal landscape, its beauty, its power.

For 35 years, wet and windy forecasts have also inspired the town’s Stormy Weather Arts Festival, set for this week with visiting artists, workshops and music. So enjoy the wind, at least until the power goes out.
