In April, Coast Weekend asked readers to submit original art pieces in honor of Mother’s Day for the second Lockdown Lowdown contest.

The contest received submissions from 10 residents who live in either Oregon or Washington state. Each entry shows a unique take on Mother’s Day, which is why all of the entries are featured this week.
Some entries feature photos of mothers, while others are of meaningful possessions. Creations include paintings, sketches, poetry and embroidery.
Jan Bono, of Ocean Park, Washington, won first, Dayle Olson, of Cathlamet, Washington, won second place and Nichole Lopez, of Astoria, won third place, by receiving the most votes for their submissions. They will be receiving gift certificates good for either Buoy Beer Co. in Astoria or The Depot Restaurant in Seaview. The gift cards are funded by a grant through Northwest Oregon Works and Oregon Coast Today.

Bono submitted an original poem titled “Mariner Mom” in honor of her mother, who loved attending Seattle Mariners games.
“As soon as I started reading your column this week, I was struck by an immediate image of my mother and I together Safeco Field watching the Mariners play on nearly a dozen Mother’s Days,” Bono said. “In fact, when she passed, I arranged for her to be buried on the Home Season Opener, as an extra reminiscence.”
Olson submitted an original painting of a mother with the phrase, “Mothers put us on the path to who we become.”
“My mom has always encouraged and nurtured my creative pursuits and believes that whatever I dream is possible,” Olson said.
Lopez submitted a charcoal drawing she made for her mother.
Lopez said, “I gifted this drawing to my mom a few years ago. She wanted me to make her something that reminded her of home so I did one inspired by the Columbia River.”
