ASTORIA — The American Association of University Women, Astoria Branch present authors Tracy J. Prince and her daughter Zadie Schaffer at the Astoria Library, 450 10th St., at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 19. The women will discuss their book “Notable Women of Portland.” The event is open to the public.

Their book explores Oregon’s history through women’s stories during pioneer times, the Progressive Era, World War I, World War II and the post-war era. There are also chapters on “Women in the Arts” and “Women in Politics.” The book describes women who radically changed Oregon, including Native Americans, pioneers, doctors, artists, suffragists, politicians and authors.

Prince, a research professor at Portland State University, has also written “Portland’s Goose Hollow,” “Culture Wars in British Literature” and “Portland’s Slabtown.” Her daughter experienced a lack of exposure to women’s voices at school, and her hope was that “Notable Women of Portland” would shine more light on the often unknown and diverse women who helped shape Oregon. This book has recently been adopted by Portland Public Schools and Catlin Gabel.
