ASTORIA – Stepping into the present from 1912 — the year women in Oregon won the right to vote — local author LaRee Johnson will appear as Abigail Scott Duniway, Oregon’s “Mother of Equal Suffrage,” at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at the Astoria Library.

Dressed in authentic period attire, Johnson will reflect in first-person on the pioneer woman’s life. She’ll share stories from Duniway’s journey on the Oregon Trail and describe her work for women’s rights – a decades-long fight which culminated in composing Oregon’s Equal Suffrage Proclamation.

Johnson’s presentations showcase vintage clothing and accessories from her personal collection and illustrate how fashion reveals much about women’s lives and roles in society. Johnson authored “Ladies’ Vintage Accessories,” an identification guide spanning the mid-1800s to modern times, and directed Herstory, a film in which she reads from pioneer women’s journals.
