Peninsula Arts Center hosts Winter Songs

LONG BEACH, Wash. — The Peninsula Arts Center will host a special Winter Songs concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, featuring three singer-songwriters: Kathryn Claire, Naomi Hooley and Rob Stroup.

Claire is part of a new generation of traditionally inspired musicians. Her guitar and fiddle playing exhibit a technical grace that is matched only by her captivating voice and ability to move seamlessly across genres. Her deep love and respect for traditional music has long been a driving influence, and those roots can be heard in her original music. Claire has toured and performed extensively in the U.S., Japan, India, Holland, Belgium and France.

When Hooley moved 3,000 miles from a small town in Alaska, the chances of meeting Stroup, from a small town in Oregon, were slim. But it happened. And from the moment they met there was musical chemistry.

Hooley is a prolific songwriter with a notable style. The press has called her voice “cool and powerful” and her songwriting “masterful.” She combines the melodic sensibilities of the great folk writers of the 1970s like Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot and James Taylor with the vocal abilities of Adele, Neko Case or Annie Lennox.

Stroup’s musical background brings a whole other set of sounds and influences. A founding member of Portland’s beloved roots rock combo The Baseboard Heaters, Stroup draws on 1960s’ rock and classic country influences.

This concert benefits the Long Beach Peninsula Acoustic Music Association, a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization.

The Peninsula Arts Center is located at 504 Pacific Ave. N. Tickets are $12 at the door and can be reserved online at www.peninsulaartscenter.org. Wine, beer and other refreshments will be available for purchase.

The Peninsula Arts Center will also host an open mic at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Singers, poets, comedians and all other performers are welcome to come perform or listen.
