MENLO, Wash. — Once again, Sunday Afternoon Live brings Navy Band Northwest to Pacific County, but this time to a new venue: the Pacific County Fairgrounds.

Local audiences look forward to SAL’s annual Red, White & Blue concert of patriotic music, often held in July. When another event got on SAL’s July schedule, planners met with the fair manager to try something new.

The seven-member Deception Brass Band will perform New Orleans-style music twice on Friday, Aug. 22: At 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., the band will appear on stage near the gate by the fair office. Folks attending might want to provide their own chairs, though bleachers will be available.

The concert is free. Anyone can get into the concert area with no fair pass through the gate by the fair office (behind the fire department). To go to the main part of the fair from the concert, non-seniors must have a pass. Fair passes are $10 (for all four days of the fair); $5 for one day only; $3 for children ages 6 to 12; and free for preschool-age children. Fair entry on Friday is free to seniors (over 65) and nursing home residents.

Plan to stay nearby after the 2 p.m. performance to hear Country Mile from Grayland, Washington. Then it’s just a short while before Deception Brass Band’s second performance at 5 p.m. The band’s two performances will be different, although some musical numbers might be repeated, such as the recognition of all branches of the military.

Navy Band Northwest’s Deception Brass Band performs for a variety of events and concerts throughout the Northwest. This New Orleans-style group performs many different musical styles, ranging from traditional jazz standards, current rock and funk, to New Orleans second-line. This ensemble will be new to the area, although the larger Navy Band Northwest’s concert band performed at the Raymond Theatre in 2013.

The Pacific County Fair is located six miles east of Raymond, Washington, on Washington State Route 6 across from the Willapa Valley Junior/Senior High School.
