ASTORIA The Astor Street Opry Company will host its 10th annual Shanghaied Costume Ball on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the ASOC Playhouse, located at 129 W. Bond St.

The ball is the culmination of the annual Miss Vivian and Miss Virginia competition, in which local coffee houses and bar establishments choose a representative as their own sturdy saloon owner Miss Vivian or sweet Miss Virginia and sell buttons with their candidates image on it. Proceeds all go toward raising money for the ASOC community theater.

At the ball, the fun will begin at 8 p.m., as The Pagan Pancakes deliver hot, rock-your-socks-off dance music, and a bevy of past and present Miss Vivians offer special entertainment. The evening will also feature live storytelling of Shanghaied Trap Door Tales or Miss Virginia Sweet Love Stories from the competing establishments, and the audience will act as the judge for prizes. There are prizes for best costumes too, including: Best Gal and Guy, Best Group Theme and Best Couple so be sure to dress up!

Then, at approximately 9:30 p.m. ASOC will stop the music to announce which of this years hardworking establishments get to take home the coveted ASOC grand prize trophies of first, second and third place for Miss Vivian and Miss Virginia 2013. The trophies were created for the event by The Trophy Case of Gearhart.

Before the ball, make sure you vote by buying your button (this truly is an election that can be bought!) for your favorite Miss Vivian or Miss Virginia at Baked Alaska, Labor Temple, Astoria Moose Lodge, Rogue Ales Public House, Uptown Cafe, Fort George Brewery, Beach N Brew, 3 Cups Coffee, Coffee Girl, Kick Ass Coffee, Rusty Cup, Blue Scorcher, Astoria Dutch Bros Coffee and Street 14 Coffee.

Entrance to this exciting event is a donation of $10 for singles or $15 for couples. The event is 21 and over only.

The competition was sponsored by the Logger Restaurant, Napa Auto Parts of Warrenton, HIPFISH and Old Town Framing Company.
