Two classical musicians to perform at free Water Music Festival concert

ILWACO, Wash. A 25-year-old soprano and 27-year-old clarinetist will be featured at a free Water Music Festival concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16 at Hilltop Auditorium.

The soloists Rachel Policar and Stefan Van Sant are winners of the 23rd annual Awards Tour competition, sponsored by the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle, a 124-year-old nonprofit corporation of women in music whose purpose is to foster classical music and provide assistance to aspiring young professional musicians (ages 20 to 35). The 2013 competition involved more than 40 musicians from a six-state area.
Soprano Rachel Policars recent performances include the title character in the world premiere of Liebovar (Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra) and Doralice (New York premiere). She holds a master of music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and degrees in vocal performance and musical theater from Arizona State University.
Her concert repertoire will include five songs by Hugo Wolf, Chanson pour les oiseaux by Louis Beydts, I Hate Music by Leonard Bernstein and two arias from Don Giovanni by Mozart.

Clarinetist Stefan Van Sant recently completed his master of music degree in clarinet performance at the University of Southern California and completed his bachelor of music degree at the Eastman School. Van Sant has appeared as a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, performed in Europe at the American Institute of Musical Studies, and attended the National Orchestral Institute. His concert agenda includes selections by Schumann, Messiaen and Poulene.
Collaborative pianist for the concert and educational outreach events is Asta Vaicekonis.
In addition to their Sept. 16 concert, Policar and Van Sant will appear at Long Beach, Wash., and Ilwaco, Wash., schools for educational outreach programs on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Those appearances are part of the Ladies Musical Clubs Music in Schools mission.
During its 124-year history, Ladies Musical Club has also sponsored numerous high-profile visiting artists such as Pablo Casals, Marilyn Horne, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Arthur Rubenstein.
