“Woodland,” the new exhibit at Lunar Boy Gallery, will feature 50 new pieces from Portland artist Amy Ruppel, including her iconic encaustic paintings and a cache of new mixed-media works. Ruppel has long proven that she will not limit her artistic endeavors to one medium. She has been a Web site designer and graphic designer for years and was selected as the 2007 holiday artist of the year for Target Stores worldwide, providing designs for everything from gift cards to television commercials. That experience has launched a multitude of different opportunities that have taken Ruppel and her artwork all over the planet.

The paintings for the upcoming show have the sweet characters and homey colors for which Ruppel has become famous. This body of work shows a continuing refinement of composition and detail that will truly excite the growing contingent of Ruppel collectors and enthusiasts, according to Lunar Boy Gallery’s Deborah Starr. The clean shapes and crisp lines harmonize beautifully with fuzzy patches of pure color and the thick, luminous wax.
In addition to her signature style, with this show Ruppel will debut mixed-media sculptures of buildings and whimsical birds in wood and clay. These charming three-dimensional departures are embellished with lighthearted patterns.
The gallery will have a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 10, in conjunction with Astoria’s Second Saturday Art Walk. Catering for the reception will be provided by Ray Price.
