Artist and plein air painter Catherine Thoele travels the Pacific Northwest and Canada painting on location. Balancing a full-time career in sales with a creative passion is challenging. Setting a goal of painting 100 6-by-8-inch studies in a year was a breakthrough in her painting skills. She uses oil paint, oil pastels or Pan Pastels, a new portable soft pastel, to make quick, simple studies, which later provide reference for large studio paintings.

Thoele will be featured artist at Dots ‘N Doodles Art Supplies from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 8, during Arts Night Out. Her presentation will show how to hone your painting and drawing skills using your choice of media. Hands-on use of Pan Pastels and Sofft tools will be provided during the program.

In addition to the presentation, there will be a display of selected pastel works by local artists.

Dots ‘N Doodles is located at 100 10th St. For more information, call (503) 325-5081.

In celebration of Arts Night Out in Astoria, local artist Nick Knapton will be exhibiting collage works, with an opening reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Astoria Coffeehouse. The exhibit will remain on display through April 10.

Knapton, a longtime Astoria resident, is known regionally and beyond for his expressive oil painting and collage work influenced by his time spent living in Berlin.
