RAINIER – Fish on! The fifth annual Rainier Booster Club Salmon Derby takes place Saturday, Sept. 9, with cash prizes for the biggest fish, a boat show, dinner by the Rainier Eagles, T-shirts, door prizes, a silent auction and a raffle.

All participants must purchase a derby ticket for $35 by Friday, Sept. 8. Tickets are available at the Rainier Eagles, Rainier RV, Rainier True Value, Bob’s Merchandise in Longview, Wash., and Kelso Marine and Channel Marine in Scappoose. Tickets to the dinner only are $10 at the door.

Derby fishers have until 5 p.m. Saturday to angle for the biggest salmon out of the mainstream Columbia River. All entries must be caught conforming to all state and local ODFW and WDFW regulations. Weigh-in will be from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Rainier Eagles.

The biggest salmon will land the grand prize of $500. Second prize is $250 and third prize is $100. There will also be a $50 lottery drawing for non-placing fish weighing a minimum of 15 pounds. In the event of an early season closure on Chinook salmon in the river and tributaries, derby tickets will be placed in a drawing to determine the cash prize winners. All other events will continue as scheduled.

For corporate teams, a $500 entry fee includes dinners and T-shirts for four fishers. Each team member is also eligible for the individual cash prizes for largest fish. Benefits to corporate teams include advertisements, a tax deduction and bragging rights. The team competition will be judged on total combined fish weight (one fish per person). Corporate prizes include a custom metal sculpture for the corporate office, four custom rod and reel combinations and a four-person charter trip, a total estimated value of $2,400.

Proceeds from the Salmon Derby benefit Rainier cocurricular activities. For more information, call (503) 556-0903 or (360) 431-5599.
