CANNON BEACH – Tolovana Arts Colony is a community based, nonprofit arts association dedicated to providing affordable, year-round arts education on the North Oregon coast.

“Our goal is to offer a rigorous, intimate and informal setting for students of all ages to pursue their talents, focus their energies and hone their craft,” states the colony’s brochure. “More than a school, Tolovana Arts Colony is a community of artists.” The faculty is composed of working artists with years of experience in their fields.

The Spring 2006 class schedule includes:

? Drawing and Painting – 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, April 5 through May 24, Tolovana Hall, 3781 S. Hemlock St. in Cannon Beach

Instructor David Kinhan studied painting and art history at Portland State University. His work has been exhibited many times, most recently at the Cannon Beach Arts Association Gallery.

Beginners and experienced artists are encouraged. The class covers basic painting and drawing techniques, along with an ongoing evaluation of aesthetics and form in the context of painting history.

? Watercolor – 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, April 13 through June 1, Tolovana Hall

Instructor Jacqueline Quint has been a practicing artist for 20 years, is a former public school educator and a member of the Oregon Watercolor Society, Trail’s End Art Association and the Palette Puddlers.

The class teaches beginning watercolor skills such as color and composition. Bring brushes and paint for the first meeting.

? Photography – 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, April 12 through May 31, Cannon Beach Historical Society, Spruce and Sunset streets in Cannon Beach

Instructor Glynis Valenti has a degree in communications/journalism-photojournalism and teaches for the Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District and the juvenile justice system.

Basic photography skills are covered, including composition, lighting, texture and essence, film and camera mechanics (including digital), photojournalism and self-expression.

? Mosaic Tile – 6 to 8 p.m. Sundays, April 2 through May 28, Tolovana Hall

Instructor Jimi Harmon studied mosaic art under Michael Kostiff in London. Over the past 20 years, he has done installations in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami. His work has been featured in Vogue and San Francisco MODA.

Learn the ancient art of mosaic and create your own masterpiece using the basic fundamentals of design, application and materials. Materials list will be provided at first meeting.

? Writing as a Craft – 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, April 6 through May 25, Cannon Beach Historical Society

Instructor Michael Burgess is an author, columnist and award-winning journalist who also teaches writing at Tillamook Bay Community College.

Before writing is an art, it’s a craft. Class topics range from finding your voice to the nuts and bolts of subject, treatment and structure, and the nasty business of finding markets. A writer is someone who writes. The challenge is to write well and with effect. Fiction and nonfiction writing are covered; all levels welcome.

? Beadmaking – 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays, March 24 through April 14, Tolovana Hall

Instructor Drew Wilkens is a ceramicist, wireworker and hot glass artist who has taught glass bead making for several years.

Learn the fundamentals of lampworking: shaping, drawing, dots, bubbles, flowers, additive effects, stringers and color reactive striking. Students will create a large number of beads and will learn to create their own studio.

? Yoga – 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, April 11 through May 30, Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce, Second and Spruce streets in Cannon Beach

Instructor Christen Allsop has studied and practiced yoga for 15 years and began teaching two years ago. Her practice is influenced by lyengar yoga and Vinyasa Flow.

This Hatha yoga class is a Vinyasa Flow practice: a slow and precise grouping of asanas (poses) that link the breath with the movement. Some yoga experience is recommended. Bring a mat and blanket; strap and blocks are optional.
