'Sicily 2,' mixed-media painting by Jamie Zollars.

In a gallery not so far away, Lunar Boy welcomes artist and illustrator Jaime Zollars in her first solo show in Astoria.

For her new show, “Far, Far Away,” Zollars has created a variety of mixed-media storybook landscapes. She sets a romantic stage for allowing the viewer to drift off into their own imagination and to complete the story themselves. Viewers will recognize some of her influences, from Pieter Bruegel to contemporary illustrators such as Henrik Drescher and Mark Ryden.

Zollars, who lives and works in Southern California as an illustrator, has brought her storybook art to many publications including Scholastic Storyworks, Highlights, Ladybug and WHERE magazine. She has degrees in Fine Arts and Photography from the Art Center College of Design and the University of Maryland. When not working for publishers, Zollars spends time making mechanical paper toys and reading children’s books.

Stop by the opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, and meet Jaime Zollars in person. The show runs through March 22.

Lunar Boy’s next show will feature local artist Darren Orange debuting his newest art from his stay in New Mexico Saturday, March 25. The gallery is located at 1133 Commercial St.
